Middle School Summer Program 



Announcing Free Summer Programs sponsored by the ALPHA Center and the Student Recreation Center:

HEALTHY BODY-HEALTHY MIND (Open to all students going into grades 6th, 7th, or 8th)

Healthy Body-Healthy Mind is a weeklong program, which focuses on developing a well-rounded individual by balancing the role of health education, fitness, nutrition, and a positive mental attitude. Students will receive instruction in mathematics as it relates to health, physical education as it relates to a healthy lifestyle, self-motivation, and character development. The goal of this project is to stimulate an awareness and exploration of self through engaging and motivational activities, which inform and challenge the body and mind. Students are provided with gifts that will enhance their learning. An awards ceremony for students and parents concludes the program. The program is free but participants are expected to attend ALL five days.
DATES: July 9 through July 13, 2012.
TIMES: 9:00 AM - 12:15 PM.

PROJECT GEMS (Girls Excelling in Mathematics with Success) (Open only to girls going into grades 7th or 8th)

Project GEMS (Girls Excelling in Mathematics with Success) is a week long summer program for middle school girls designed to provide a stimulating experience so that mathematics is seen as interesting, relevant and related to success in life. GEMS nurtures positive attitudes in girls as they learn about mathematics, community service, and are exposed to mentoring from women who are successful in education and business endeavors. The curriculum for GEMS includes: quantitative literacy; critical thinking and problem solving; algebra and geometry for career success; history of successful women; the importance of role models, and community volunteerism. Students are provided with materials, supplies, and gifts that enhance their learning and retaining of mathematical ideas. An awards ceremony concludes the program (including parents, teachers and community leaders), where each participant receives a certificate. The program is free but participants are expected to attend ALL five days.

Acceptance to each program is based on a combination of the answers on your application, your teacher recommendation, meeting the May 18 deadline, and program space limitations.

Acceptance letters will be mailed the week of June 11 for those applicants accepted to participate in each respective program.

Applicants may only participate in ONE of these programs during the week.
