Class Registration

You must register for classes in person at the front counter of the Student Recreation Center. A waiver of liability must be signed at registration. We accept cash, check, debit and Visa or MasterCard. All classes require appropriate work out clothing to participate. Denim and jeans are not allowed.

Dance

This class is designed to familiarize students with basic contemporary warm-ups and stretches, across-the-floor combinations that build technique, and challenging choreography that aims to express the artist within all of us. All levels of experience are welcome as the material in the class will build strength, rhythm, and flexibility. This class will start at the beginner level so no prior dance experience is needed, and will ease into intermediate level choreography. Please wear stretchy, comfortable clothes. We will dance in either our feet or socks, but jazz and modern shoes are great as well.

Come join Evolution Hip Hop Dance Team Alumni in learning the basics of hip hop dance. Students will learn basic concepts for the first half of the class, and then will be introduced to four choreographed dance routines for the second half of the class. All are welcome and no previous dance experience is required. Please be prompt and wear comfortable clothing, no denim or jeans please.

This Intermediate class is taught by members of Evolution Hip Hop and is recommended for students who are comfortable with learning choreography. Students will learn a new dance piece every week that will increase in difficulty for progressive learning depending on the class skill level. Aloha, Come and learn the graceful dance of the Hawaiian hula. This combination class is geared for the beginner who has never danced hula and for the more experienced hula dancer. We will be dancing the hula auana, which is the modern hula. The first 15 minutes will focus on the basic hula steps and the last 15 minutes will focus on the more advanced steps for the intermediate dancer. You will learn about the musical implements used, food traditions, language, history and the culture of Hawaii through the art of hula. Students should wear comfortable clothes.

This is a great opportunity for UCR students and non-students to get their feet wet in this popular dance-sport at the UCR Student Recreation Center. Ballroom and Latin dancing is an aerobic exercise. It’s also a great way to release stress from school and work. You get to listen to all kinds of music from Hip-Hop and Rock ‘n Roll to Jazz and Latin music. It’s also a great social activity for both the young and old. You will be taught different dance routines and techniques for both social and competitive International Ballroom and Latin dancing. You don’t need a partner to learn International Ballroom and Latin Dancing.

We welcome everyone to join us as we introduce some basic International Style figures (Bronze Level) and add some Silver Level figures for those with slightly more experience. You do not need a partner to experience the joy of moving to the beautiful music and learning a short routine. We will give you some great tips on the technique of movement and of leading and following. This information should help to improve all your ventures into partner dancing in the future.

This Salsa class is designed to teach the foundations of salsa dancing and will focus on core footwork, proper technique, and basic patterns. People will have the opportunity to dance with everyone in the class; therefore, no partner is required. As this is a beginning class, prior dance experience is not needed. The goal of this class is to give students the necessary skill to dance socially at nearly any salsa event. Please wear comfortable clothing and athletic footwear.

General

Series starts Fall quarter and continues into Winter and Spring quarters. Materials needed: A practice chanter (one will be available for sale to all participants at the first class). Cost range: approximately $50+ depending on the brand and type of chanter selected by the participant. All other class materials will be provided free of charge. Class description: Learn the rudiments of playing the Highland Bagpipe under the instruction of the Pipe Major of the UCR Pipe Band, Mike Terry. Elementary fingering and music skills as applicable to the bagpipe are taught on a practice chanter: a small, relatively quiet instrument that looks and sounds much like a recorder, but with fingering the same as on a bagpipe. While a help, the ability to read music is not a prerequisite. Cost: $20 (student) $30 (non-student).

Women & Men ages 18 and up, will learn to prevent assaults and will practice how to effectively fight back in life-threatening situations. The physical techniques are easy to learn and are practiced to integrate them into “body-memory.” Please wear sweats or other loose, comfortable clothing. The American Red Cross Standard First Aid with CPR/AED - Adult and Child incorporates the current American Red Cross standards. It will help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. The courses in the program teach skills that participants need to know to give immediate care to a suddenly injured or ill person until more advanced medical personnel arrive and take over. Students who successfully complete this course will receive certificates for Standard First Aid with CPR/AED - Adult and Child which are valid for two years.

Martial Arts

Aikido is an effective defense that builds strength, endurance, and substantial self-defense skills. At Riverside Aikido, great emphasis is placed on clean, precise technique, weapons skills (Jo and Bokken) and fluid Ukemi (the art of the fall or getting out of the way). Riverside Aikido is a proud affiliate of the United States Aikido Federation, West Region.

This is an introductory course in Kodokan Judo. Students will learn several basic throws, pins, arm bars and chokes. Students will also learn how to fall properly to protect themselves from injury. Free practice (Randori) will include standing techniques and mat work. Judo etiquette is emphasized and respectful behavior is required during the class. Students may test for Yellow Belt at the end of the quarter if they have met all technical and attendance requirements.

**APPROVAL REQUIRED**
This is intermediate and advanced training in Kodokan Judo. Students must have prior instructor approval before being accepted into this class. Judo Gis are required. This class focuses on Tachi Waza (standing techniques) and Ne Waza (ground techniques). Kata will also be taught and practiced on a selection basis. Competition is recommended but not required as it is a crucial method for testing and improving judo skills. All advanced students are asked to become members of USJA to help support the Riverside Judo Dojo’s certification. USJA membership is not mandatory if students choose not to compete. Rank advancement is much slower in the advanced class and shall be on an invitation basis based on the student’s performance and attendance, as well as accumulation of required USJA points.

Learn confidence, self-defense, discipline, and manners in a safe, fun, and educational environment through the fundamental teachings of traditional Shotokan Karate-Do. There are opportunities for competition at local, regional, national, and international levels. The Japan Karate-Do Federation is a proud member of the AAU. Yearly AAU membership is $14.

This old form of Yang Style T’ai Chi ch’uan system teaches sword, broadsword, walking stick, and long staff. Both forms and applications will be taught. Prerequisite, one quarter of t’ai-chi ch’uan.

T’ai Chi is good for coordination, balance, and low intensity Aerobic Exercise and it is an internal form of kung fu. T’ai chi is used for stress reduction, lowering blood pressure, improving balance as well as a traditional martial art. Harvey Kurland is officially certified by the Chinese Tai Chi Chuan Association.

This is a multilevel class with an introduction to the Old form of Yang Style Symmetrical 28 Form for beginners and long form for continuing students. Taught in order: ch’i kung (qigong), Long form, pushing hands, San shou application form, t’ai chi fast form, t’ai chi sword, broadsword and stick. The beginning form is low intensity and can be done by anyone who can walk. Harvey Kurland is officially certified by the Chinese Tai Chi Chuan Association.

This class teaches the symmetrical Old Form of Yang style system including Standing Meditation, O’mei Ch’i Kung (Emmei qigong) Symmetrical Long Form, Pushing Hands, San Shou Application Form, Sword and Walking stick. Hsing-I ch’uan (Xing Yi quan) and pa-kua chang (baguazhang) is also taught. Kurland is 6th generation Yang style and is certified as Chief Instructor by the CTCCA and has over 35 years of experience. Students must complete the first form in this series to take this class.

The straight sword form is one of the major t’ai-chi weapons and often practiced as an “Energy” training method. Basic Sword movements and The Yang-Tchoung Style Chien will be taught. UCR students have competed successfully in National Competition in this form. More at dotaichi.com.

Parking

Lot 25 (in front of the SRC) has no available parking spaces due to ongoing construction. Parking for classes is in any guest lot (Lot 22, 24, 30). Guest parking passes are available at the kiosk at the UCR entrance off of University Avenue and on Canyon Crest Drive off of Martin Luther King Blvd.
