Class Registration

You must register for classes in person at the front counter of the Student Recreation Center. A waiver of liability must be signed at registration. We accept cash, check, debit and Visa or MasterCard. All classes require appropriate work out clothing to participate. Denim and jeans are not allowed.

Dance

Direct from Buenos Aires - The Ultimate Dance of Nostalgia and Desire! Danced to haunting melodies, this alluring dance expresses the fleeting but eternal dialogue of the spirit translated into a language of intricate and flirtatious footwork. No experience needed - no partner needed - to learn the Universal Language of the Argentine Tango.

This class is designed to teach the foundations of Bachata; a dance that originates from the Dominican Republic. Our class will focus on core footwork, body movement, proper technique, and basic patterns. Students will have the opportunity to dance with everyone in the class; no partner is required. As this is a beginning class, prior dance experience is not needed. The goal of this class is to give students the necessary skill to dance socially at nearly any event where Bachata is played (usually at Salsa events and clubs). Please wear comfortable clothing (no jeans) and non-marking, comfortable footwear.

This workshop will examine the basic coordination between the movements of the feet and torso as well as the posture of the head and arms in the exhilarating Ballroom Dance of Quickstep. This enables the dancers to move more efficiently and give a better performance on the dance floor whether it is socially or competitively. A short Bronze and Silver routine will be used to demonstrate these techniques of body coordination thereby presenting a more pleasing relationship between the partners.

Come and study the art of bellydance by exploring new movement combinations and layers, choreographic and improvisational techniques. Learn Middle Eastern dance choreographies, as well as the use of various props while exercising and delving into Middle Eastern dance culture and history. In this Contemporary/Modern Dance class students will be given an introduction to contemporary and modern dance technique. The class will consist of a thorough warm up, learning phrases of choreography which will change with each class, and working on travel passes across the studio floor. An introduction to floor work and various dance jumps will be taught as well. This class is for the beginner and no prior dance experience is needed. Please wear loose comfortable clothing, jeans are not allowed.

Come join Evolution Hip Hop Dance Team Alumni in learning the basics of hip hop dance. Students will learn basic concepts for the first half of the class, and then will be introduced to four choreographed dance routines for the second half of the class. This Intermediate class is taught by members of Evolution Hip Hop and is recommended for students who are comfortable with learning choreography. Students will learn a new dance piece every week that will increase in difficulty for progressive learning depending on the class skill level. Building on the fundamentals taught in the beginner salsa class, the intermediate salsa class will cover more complex dance patterns as well as introduce more structure in musicality, timing, body movement, and styling. Knowledge of how to perform basic turns, the cross-body lead, the cross-body lead with a turn, and all basic footwork is HIGHLY recommended. People should wear comfortable clothing. Please be prompt and wear comfortable clothing, no denim or jeans please. Proper dance shoes are highly encouraged, but not required.

General

Materials needed: A practice chanter (one will be available for sale to all participants at the first class). Cost range: approximately $50+ depending on the brand and type of chanter selected by the participant. All other class materials will be provided free of charge. Class description: Learn the rudiments of playing the Highland Bagpipe under the instruction of the Pipe Major of the UCR Pipe Band, Mike Terry. Elementary fingering and music skills as applicable to the bagpipe are taught on a practice chanter: a small, relatively quiet instrument that looks and sounds much like a recorder, but with fingering the same as on a bagpipe. While a help, the ability to read music is not a prerequisite.

Women & Men ages 18 and up, will learn to prevent assaults and will practice how to effectively fight back in life-threatening situations. The physical techniques are easy to learn and are practiced to integrate them into “body-memory.” Please wear sweats or other loose, comfortable clothing. The course in this program will teach skills that participants need to know to give immediate care to a suddenly injured or ill person until more advanced medical personnel arrive and take over. Students who successfully complete this course will receive certificates for Standard First Aid with CPR/AED - Adult, Child and Infant which are valid for two years.

A tennis class designed to introduce the student to the basic strokes in tennis, the forehand, backhand, serve, volley, and slice backhand. This will be applicable to all skill levels. The idea is to get beginners started in the right direction and sharpen the game of more advanced players. The better you play the more fun the game becomes. Note: Must bring two cans of fresh tennis balls.

Martial Arts

Aikido is an effective defense that builds strength, endurance, and substantial self-defense skills. At Riverside Aikido, great emphasis is placed on clean, precise technique, weapons skills (Jo and Bokken) and fluid Ukemi (the art of the fall or getting out of the way). Riverside Aikido is a proud affiliate of the United States Aikido Federation, West Region.

This is an introductory course in Kodokan Judo. Students will learn several basic throws, pins, arm bars and chokes. Students will also learn how to fall properly to protect themselves from injury. Free practice (Randori) will include standing techniques and mat work. Judo etiquette is emphasized and respectful behavior is required during the class. Students may test for Yellow Belt at the end of the quarter if they have met all technical and attendance requirements.

**APPROVAL REQUIRED**
This is intermediate and advanced training in Kodokan Judo. Students must have prior instructor approval before being accepted into this class. Judo Gis are required. This class focuses on Tachi Waza (standing techniques) and Ne Waza (ground techniques). Kata will also be taught and practiced on a selection basis. Competition is recommended but not required as it is a crucial method for testing and improving judo skills. All advanced students are asked to become members of USJA to help support the Riverside Judo Dojo’s certification. USJA membership is not mandatory if students choose not to compete. Rank advancement is much slower in the advanced class and shall be on an invitation basis based on the student’s performance and attendance, as well as accumulation of required USJA points.

Learn confidence, self-defense, discipline, and manners in a safe, fun, and educational environment through the fundamental teachings of traditional Shotokan Karate-Do. There are opportunities for competition at local, regional, national, and international levels. The Japan Karate-Do Federation is a proud member of the AAU. Yearly AAU membership is $14.

This old form of Yang Style T’ai Chi ch’uan system teaches sword, broadsword, walking stick, and long staff. Both forms and applications will be taught. Prerequisite, one quarter of t’ai-chi ch’uan.

T’ai Chi is good for coordination, balance, and low intensity Aerobic Exercise and it is an internal form of kung fu. T’ai chi is used for stress reduction, lowering blood pressure, improving balance as well as a traditional martial art. Harvey Kurland is officially certified by the Chinese Tai Chi Chuan Association.

This is a multilevel class with an introduction to the Old form of Yang Style Symmetrical 28 Form for beginners and long form for continuing students. Taught in order: ch’i kung (qigong), Long form, pushing hands, San shou application form, t’ai chi fast form, t’ai chi sword, broadsword and stick. The beginning form is low intensity and can be done by anyone who can walk. Harvey Kurland is officially certified by the Chinese Tai Chi Chuan Association.

This class teaches the symmetrical Old Form of Yang style system including Standing Meditation, O’mei Ch’i Kung (Emmei qigong) Symmetrical Long Form, Pushing Hands, San Shou Application Form, Sword and Walking stick. Hsing-I ch’uan (Xing Yi quan) and pa-kua chang (baguazhang) is also taught. Kurland is 6th generation Yang style and is certified as Chief Instructor by the CTCCA and has over 35 years of experience. Students must complete the first form in this series to take this class.

Pushing/Sensing hands is a training method unique to tai chi chuan used to develop sensitivity and rooting. Parking

Lot 25 (in front of the SRC) has no available parking spaces due to ongoing construction. Parking for classes is in any guest lot (Lot 22, 24, 30). Guest parking passes are available at the kiosk at the UCR entrance off of University Avenue and on Canyon Crest Drive off of Martin Luther King Blvd.
