The Rock
The Rock offers a different way to work out and hang out! Shoe rentals, chalk, and equipment are all free. Just scan in and ask a yellow shirt to show you the ropes. If you don’t see a yellow shirt, you can still grab a pair of shoes and climb on the boulder whenever the gym is open. We also host clinics, competitions, and special events to help bring our climbing community together.

The Rock FAQs
-
What is the grade system at the Rock?
We use a color tag system, and all our climbs are monochromatic! What does that mean? Tags, from easiest to hardest, are green, blue, red, yellow, and black. If you see a green tag on a red hold, it means that if you climbing with you hands and feet only touching red holds, that an easy climb! Each tag is its own climb. Ask a yellow shirt to show you around for more information about how we grade.
-
How much does it cost?
Chalk, shoes, harnesses, belay devices, and fun are all free at the Rock! We will also belay certify you for free. Over the course of the year, we do offer clinics and competitions at a small fee. Keep an eye out for our events to see what’s coming up.
-
What are the belay hours at The Rock?
In order to use the belay system, two staffers must be on shift. Belay hours are Sunday through Thursday from 5:30pm to 9:30pm.
-
What is the difference between Autobelay and Belay?
The Autobelay is an automatic belay system that allows climbers to clip into a device hanging from the wall and climb up and come down without a partner. The device will lower you automatically and gently when you let go. Belay, on the other hand, is a system that requires a partner to “belay” the climber and manage the rope as the climber goes up the wall. Yellow shirts can belay you during belay hours. You can also learn how to belay and get certified during belay hours!

How do I use The Rock?
To use the facilities, come to The Rock desk and scan your UCR SRC barcode. Inform the worker of your shoe size if you need rental shoes. If you need help with sizing, a staffer can assist you. Harnesses are available for free when staff is present. If no one is at the desk, sign in using the barcode scanner and grab rental shoes.
-
What should I do when I am done with my rentals?
If you borrowed a harness, hang it up in the hook it came from. If you rented shoes, strap and clasp them together before returning them to the black basket next to the desk. We will spray them and put them away for you.
-
What should I wear when climbing at The Rock?
Wear comfortable athletic clothing that allows for a full range of motion, such as shorts or leggings and a t-shirt or tank top. Climbing shoes can be rented if needed, or you can bring your own. Do not where chunky jewelry because it can be a safety hazard.
